Why Shared Piano Lessons Are Perfect for Homeschool Families

If you're a homeschool parent, you already know that the best learning happens when it's engaging, flexible and fits your family's rhythm. Music is no different. I've come to believe that shared online piano lessons are a wonderful, and often overlooked, option for homeschool families.

What are shared piano lessons?

Shared lessons (some people call them group lessons) bring two or three students together in the same online session. Using the Simply Music method, students learn alongside peers at a similar stage, playing real music from the very first lesson rather than starting with scales and theory.

At Easy Keys Music, these sessions happen on a virtual meeting platform, so your child learns from home on a schedule that works for your family.

The social side changes everything

When students learn alongside peers, piano stops being a solitary activity. It becomes something they do together: something to look forward to, talk about and share. In my own lessons, I've seen students enjoy hearing and watching each other play, encourage one another and celebrate each other's progress.

That matters for homeschool kids in particular, who may have fewer chances for everyday friendship during the week.

Why connection matters as kids grow

In my own experience, with my children and with the students I've taught, there's a shift in the teen years. The peer group becomes increasingly influential. Teens love spending time with their friends and will stick with activities done in social groups, like sport. Piano lessons are mostly taught one-on-one, which can be less appealing by comparison.

When music is tied to friendship and shared experience, I believe it's more likely to become part of who a child is. They aren't just learning piano; they're part of a musical community.

I saw this with my own daughter. When she started high school, I chose a teacher and a time slot that let her connect with her friends at the same music school. I could have taught her myself, but I knew she needed more than a teacher and a method. She needed her peers.

Affordable, too

At Easy Keys Music, private lessons are $165 per month. Shared lessons are $114 per month, for 36 lessons a year. That's $51 less each month, a meaningful saving for families managing a homeschool budget. I've found the Simply Music method works beautifully in a shared setting, so the lower price doesn't mean a lower-quality lesson.

The convenience factor

Online lessons mean no travel, no traffic and no rushing from one activity to the next. Your child joins the lesson from home, and it begins. For families already juggling a full schedule, that flexibility makes a real difference. Lessons run on Fridays, a day that fits well in most homeschool timetables.
